Weapons are tools of destruction, no matter how you put it, a weapon is used to kill or damage. There are three types of weapons, with one weapon being able to have a cross between two type of weapons. These three types are melee, ranged and special.
Melee weapons are used for direct combat, being of either short or medium ranged and adds more damage by using your Strength. These can be thrown, just remember to pick them up later.
(Example Melee)
Spear
Type: Melee
+10 piercing
A pole with a blade on the end for piercing.
Ranged weapons are next up. These can be either thrown or mechanical. The difference between the two is that thrown weapons rely on your strength for not only damage, but also distance. For each 50 points you have in strength, you can throw the weapon 1 yard. So a person with 1,000 strength can throw it 500 yards before it hits the ground.
Mechanical ranged weapons are usually guns, or crossbows. These require ammo to fire off, or power if they use energy. If they require energy, you can substitute your own MP, 1 shot requires one MP. You can charge the shots, multiplying the damage of the shots by how many turns you charge it, but it also requires as much MP. (3 turns max).
Mechanical also have a set damage, which means it doesn't add more damage depending on your stats, it increases with upgrades. Also, it has a firing option (IE- Semi-autio), which doesn't really change.
(Example ranged)
.50 Magnum revolver
Type: Ranged
100 dmg blunt
Range: Medium
Rounds: 6
A revolver-styled hand canon able to fire off powerful shots.
Finally, we come to special weapons. Usually these take the form of a wand or rod, or even a ring. These cause special attack damage multiplied by your own special power, some require MP, some don't need it at all. Special weapons usually come with a special attribute, like status anomalies or even other special effects. Here's one example.
(EXAMPLE Special weapon)
Fire rod
Type: Special
Special Power +500
A rod which fires off a ball or a spray of fire, causing burning damage and a chance to burn.
As I said earlier, weapons can be crossed, like a ranged-sword hybrid, like a rifle-katana hybrid weapon that causes both melee and ranged combat. These kind of weapons are not as strong as pure weapons though.
Finally, you can also dual-wield certain weapons, as long as they take up only one hand, or if you have enough strength to hold them
